Abstract
Purpose: To see the possibility of survival for cultured chondrocytes injected into the allogenic meniscus.

Materials and Methods: We harvested chondrocytes of articular cartilage from one of the subjects, cultured and multiplied them in vitro. We harvested menisci from 3 different subjects and kept them in -70 degrees Celsius for over 3 months. We divided each of fresh frozen meniscuses into 4 pieces, 1 piece without chondrocyte injection (control group), 3 other pieces (experimental group) injected 2¡¿106cells/ml concentrated by 0.1 ml. For control group, we observed the results after a week and for experimental group, observed the results after 1st, 2nd and 3rd week with optical microscope.

Results: We could barely find survived cells in controll group. A larger number of survived cells were arranged linearly after 1 week and mostly disappeared in experimental group after 2~3 weeks.

Conclusion: Injected chondrocytes in the allogenic meniscus survived in vitro over one week in certain conditions. Follow up study and clinical study should be continued to meet the best condition for increasing survival rate.
